The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the rise in Afghanistan as “serious child rights violations” and said that children should not pay for this conflict with their childhoods. In a tweet, UNICEF Afghanistan highlighted the recent explosion at a Shia mosque in Kandahar that killed two 17-year-old boys.

The blast rocked the mosque in which more than 60 people were killed and more than 80 were injured. The Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) claimed responsibility for the blast. According to Khama Press report, ISIS-K on its Telegram channel said that the attack and the double blast were carried out by them.

“Two 17-year-old boys were reportedly killed in an attack on a mosque in Kandahar during Friday prayers. UNICEF is concerned about an increase in serious child rights violations in Afghanistan. Children must be protected .Children should not pay for this struggle with their childhood,” tweeted UNICEF Afghanistan.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned the “horrific terrorist attack” against Imam Bargah-e-Fatima Mosque in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province and underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

In a statement issued by the UNSC, members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy and full recovery to the injured.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

Amid reports of escalating violence in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) earlier this month adopted a resolution to establish a special coordination and a team of experts to monitor human rights.
