UNGA General Debate begins today, PM Modi and Joe Biden to meet on September 24

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a busy week ahead for him, as the three-day US visit is set to begin later this week. The first bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden will take place on September 24, 2021.

Later that day, Biden will host the Quad Leaders Summit for the first time in person at the White House with Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. That same night, Biden will host a lavish dinner.

A day before meeting Biden, US Vice President Kamala Harris will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House here on September 23. This will be the first meeting between the two leaders. Harris had earlier spoken to Modi over the phone during the COVID-19 crisis.

Modi will hold a one-on-one meeting with five CEOs of top US companies on September 23, which may include Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook, while other names are yet to be finalised. According to media reports, Modi will also have bilateral meetings with Suga and Morrison on the same day.

This will be Biden and Modi’s first meeting since becoming president, although the two have spoken virtually on several occasions. He had previously met Biden on his first visit to the US as prime minister in 2014. Biden was then the vice president in the administration of President Barack Obama. The last telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden was on 26 April.

Soon after the dinner, PM Modi will be on his way to New York as he will address the general debate on September 25. India will use its voice in the high-level UN General Assembly to strongly raise global issues like terrorism. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti told PTI that the COVID-19 pandemic and developments in Afghanistan are expected to dominate the 76th UNGA session. The 76th UNGA is an important occasion for India for several reasons. It is expected that India will use its voice as a leading voice of the developing world as well as a current member of the UN Security Council to take up global issues firmly.
