‘Unfashioned’ military withdrawal in Afghanistan led to ‘chaotic, dire situation’: Ambassador Mamundze slams US

Videos are surfacing of Afghans fleeing their country, increasingly profiting from the Taliban in India’s neighbourhood. The situation remains grim with the Taliban occupying nearly a third of Afghanistan’s 374 districts. Even as the Afghan government is arguing that it is in control of the situation, the Afghan ambassador to India has hit out at the US for leaving the country in a tizzy.

Fareed Mamundje told CNN-News18 that the US troop withdrawal was “unexpected”, which “has created a very chaotic and dire situation in Afghanistan.” He said that, “Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Taliban have intensified violence across the country and as a result of the intensity of the violence, we have lost more than 3,600 people in less than three months and 200,000 people internally.” have been displaced.”

He said: “Active fighting is going on in 160 districts. It’s a difficult situation for us.”

Ambassador Mamundze cited the example of US forces withdrawing from Bagram Air Base, underlining that there was “poor coordination” between US and Afghan forces. He said this caused panic among the local population which could have been avoided.

Despite this, the Afghan ambassador tried to reassure other countries that the Afghan government was doing its best to keep the diplomatic missions of other countries safe. He said Afghan forces had captured at least 10 districts from the Taliban and added that they were determined to keep the situation under control.

“The Taliban have waged war against the Afghan government and the Afghan people in a very unprecedented manner and political and diplomatic missions across the country are concerned. Not only India but other countries which have diplomatic presence. We as a responsible country are doing everything to control the situation. We would not like to close any consulate or mission in Kandahar or Mazar-e-Sharif. We understand the security concerns and respect the decisions of the people concerned… There has been a staff shortage in diplomatic missions of many countries due to security concerns, but so far the major cities are safe.”

India had issued a statement saying that neither the embassy in Kabul nor the consulates in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif were closed. However, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “However, we are carefully monitoring the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan and its effects on the safety and security of Indian citizens in Afghanistan. How the situation develops will depend on it.” If so, our responses will be calibrated accordingly.”

Ambassador Mamundze also denied reports that the Afghan government would eventually fall after US troops withdrew. He said, “We strongly disagree with any assessment that the Afghan government will fall within six or twelve months. This is an unrealistic estimate. The Afghan army is about 400,000 strong and the Taliban’s strength of 70,000-75,000.” Judging by, we are six to seven times more than them.”

As the August deadline for a US withdrawal draws closer, reports are pouring in from the grounds that the widespread sentiment is that the US has left Afghanistan to end its longest war.
