Unemployment rate 9.3% in Jan-March 2021: NSO survey – Times of India

New Delhi: Unemployment The rate rose to 9.3 percent for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas in January-March 2021, from 9.1 percent in the same month last year. Periodic Labor Force Survey by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
Unemployment Or the unemployment rate (UR) is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labor force.
The 10th Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) showed that the UR in CWS (current weekly status) for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas in October-December 2020 was 10.3 per cent.
It also showed that the unemployment rate among women in urban areas (aged 15 years and above) rose to 11.8 per cent in January-March 2021, from 10.6 per cent a year earlier. It was 13.1 per cent in October-December 2020.
Among men, the UR in the urban area (age 15 years and above) remained flat at 8.6 per cent in January-March 2021 compared to a year ago. It was 9.5 per cent in October-December 2020.
The labor force participation rate in CWS (current weekly status) in urban areas stood at 47.5 per cent in the January-March quarter of 2021, up from 48.1 per cent in the same period a year ago. It was 47.3% in October-December 2020.
Labor force refers to that part of the population that produces or supplies labor to carry on economic activities for the production of goods and services and, therefore, includes both employed and unemployed persons.
NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. Based on the PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is brought out giving an estimate of the labor force indicators, i.e. UR, labor population ratio (WPR), Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Employment in Current Weekly Status (CWS) and distribution of workers on the basis of industry-wide status of work.
Estimates of unemployed people in the CWS give an average picture of unemployment over a short period of seven days during the survey period.
In the CWS approach, a person is considered unemployed if he did not work for an hour on any day during the week, but was sought or available for work for at least one hour on any day during that period. .
The labor force as per CWS is the average number of people either employed or unemployed in the week preceding the date of the survey. LFPR is defined as the percentage of the population in the labor force.
The WPR (in percentage) in CWS in urban areas in January-March 2021 was 43.1 per cent in January-March 2021, as against 43.7 per cent in the same period a year ago. It was 42.4% in October-December 2020.
Nine bulletins of PLFS for the quarter ended December 2018, March 2019, June 2019, September 2019, December 2019, March 2020, June 2020, September 2020 and December 2020 have already been issued. The latest bulletin is the tenth in the series.
