Gangster Abu Salem, the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai blast case, was transported under tight security from New Delhi to Manmad in Nashik district by train on Saturday.

Footage shows Salem disembarking from the train, surrounded by police officers, while a large crowd gathered at the station. He was then moved to a police van waiting outside and subsequently transported to the Nashik Road Central Jail.

The gangster’s arrival at Manmad railway station was kept highly secret. He was transported from the national capital via the New Delhi-Bengaluru-Karnataka Express and then taken by road under stringent security measures to the Nashik Road Central Jail, Loksatta reported.

Currently serving a life sentence for his involvement in the bombings, Salem had last month sought to prevent his transfer from Taloja Central Prison to Nashik Central Prison by appealing to the Bombay High Court last month, citing ‘safety concerns’.

His initial appeal was denied by the sessions court on June 25, but the court instructed prison authorities to delay his transfer until July 3.
