Krishnagiri: Four members of a debt-ridden family committed suicide at their residence near Hosur on Friday morning.
Mathigiri police have identified the deceased as 40-year-old J Mohan, his wife M Ramya, 33, daughter M Hanamaya, 8 and mother J Vasanthakumari. They were living in Swarnabhumi Layout near Mathigiri.
A police officer said that Mohan was engaged in online trading, which was making huge losses. “He had borrowed lakhs of rupees from the banking and non-banking sectors and various people. And he was not in a financial position to repay them. Hence, he along with other family members decided to commit suicide.
On Thursday night, it appeared that Mohan had fed poisoned food to his wife, daughter and mother and died of suffocation by covering her head with polythene, the official said. “He had turned on the television before committing suicide.”
On Friday morning, neighbors heard the sound of television but did not see any family member out of the house. “Some of them knocked on the door of the house and there was no response. He informed Mathigiri police.
Vasanthakumari was found dead in a bedroom on the ground floor of the house, while the bodies of Ramya and Hannya were found in a bedroom on the first floor, where Mohan’s body was also found, the official said. The bodies were sent to Government Hospital in Hosur for postmortem.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Murali (Hosur sub-division) Sub-Inspector Chitras and other police personnel visited the house.
Mohan had left a suicide note. He said that he is in deep debt and hence is taking this extreme step along with his family members,” the official said. Mathigiri police have registered a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and further investigation is on.
