The youth from Aligarh was living in a rented house in Baraula village with his younger brother and two cousins – all preparing for the army

A 21-year-old youth died after allegedly hanging himself at his residence here, days after he unsuccessfully attempted to clear an examination for army recruitment, police officials said on Wednesday.

Police said the youth, a resident of Aligarh, was living in a rented house in Baraula village along with his younger brother and two cousins, who were preparing for the army.

“On Tuesday afternoon, the local police received information about the youth committing suicide. Immediately, a police team reached the spot and took possession of the body, which was hanging from the ceiling fan, and sent it for postmortem,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida), Harish Chander.

“Probe into the matter revealed that the youth was preparing for competitive exams including army recruitment, in which he could not qualify. He was unhappy with it and that is why he took such a drastic step,” said the DCP.

According to a local official, the youth belonging to an economically weak family has also left an alleged suicide note.

In the note, he expressed regret for not being able to join the army and asked his younger brother to fulfill his dream of joining the defense forces besides taking care of his parents, the officer said.

Mental health experts believe that suicide can be prevented if earlier observers, such as a parent or spouse or friend, recognize and talk to the behavior change in a person so that they do not doubt their self-esteem.
