UN Security Council urges Myanmar violence to end

The UN Security Council on Wednesday expressed deep concern over escalating violence in Myanmar and in a rare statement, agreed by 15 members, called for an immediate end to fighting and the military to exercise extreme restraint.

The statement comes amid reports of heavy weapons and troop build-up in Chin state, with an impending army to eliminate militia groups formed after the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government in a February 1 coup. The attack was suggested.
