World football’s governing body is reviewing the international match calendar, led by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, proposing a major tournament each year.
Under the proposals, the World Cup will rotate with continental tournaments such as European Championship and is played every other year instead of every fourth.
“We can decide not to play in it,” Ceferin, head of European football’s governing body, told The Times newspaper.
“As far as I know, South Americans are on the same page. So good luck with a World Cup like this.
“I think it will never happen because it goes against the fundamentals of football.
Slovenian Ceferin said, “Playing a month-long tournament every summer, it’s a killer for the players. If it clashes with the Olympic football tournament with the Women’s World Cup every two years.”
“The price is okay because it happens every four years, you wait for it, it’s like Olympic GamesWell, this is a big event. I don’t see our unions supporting it.”
FIFA’s Congress voted with a large majority for a ‘feasibility study’ on the idea of a biennial World Cup, but Ceferin insisted the idea should be rejected.
“I hope they (FIFA) will come to their senses, because I don’t see the right way to go everywhere except the federations, not to talk to us.
“They didn’t come, they didn’t call, I didn’t get a letter or anything. I just read in the media.”
Ceferin said he was not interested in UEFA’s Euros to be held every two years instead of every four years.
“It may be financially good for UEFA but the problem is we will kill football like that. We are killing players. I don’t think clubs let players go and that would completely divide us.”
