Udupi students: Won’t go to college without hijab. Mangaluru News – Times of India

Udupi: The Six Students of Government PU College for Girls Protesting people demanding permission to attend classes wearing hijab said they were disappointed with the High Court’s decision. Six have not attended classes since the last week of December.
“We had pinned all our hopes on the judiciary and the Constitution. Wearing hijab is an essential part of our religion and finds mention in the Quran,” he reiterated on Tuesday.
Almas and Aaliya Asadi, representing the six girls, said, “We are not feeling positive about the decision. We will not go to class without the hijab and will fight against it in every possible way legally.”
“Hijab is an essential part of our religion. Our priority is religion and education. This issue could have been resolved within the four walls of our college. But it got political mileage, and then it became communal,” he claimed, claiming that refusing to allow him to attend classes wearing a hijab would mean that Muslim girls across the state would find it difficult to pursue their education.
“We are mentally exhausted. Had Dr BR Ambedkar been alive, he would have cried,” he questioned whether uniforms are more important to the government than the education of Muslim girls. The students said they would talk to their lawyers about the future course of action.
On other Muslim students attending classes without hijab, she said it was her choice. “But these girls would also like to follow religion and culture,” he claimed.
The girls said that they would take the exam only if they were allowed to wear the hijab.
“We are preparing for the exam on our own. We will fight till we get our due. The government’s order came when we approached the High Court and not at the beginning of the academic year. Before going to the High Court, we went to all the departments and sought help in solving the matter. Our parents are also supporting us,” he said.
