New Delhi: The Center on Friday told the Delhi High Court that it will consult stakeholders on the issue of preparing uniform civil code after receiving it law commissionreport on this issue.
In May 2019, the court had sought the Centre’s response on a plea by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, seeking constitution of a judicial commission to prepare the draft. UCC Promote national integration, and gender justice and equality.
The Center told the court that the issue was important and needed a thorough study of various personal laws. It also said that the petition is not maintainable as the creation of the UCC is a “matter of policy” to be decided by the “elected”. representatives of the people” and “no direction can be issued in this regard”.
Apart from Upadhyay’s petition, four others have argued that India “urgently needs a uniform civil code”.
