Uber won’t let you use split-fare feature for a while: What it means

Uber users will temporarily not be able to use the easy split-fare feature, the company said this week. Uber says it is making some changes to the option so that people can make better use of it.

An improved version of Split-Fair is likely to be released in the coming months. We’re not sure how Uber can actually improve this feature, given that you can split the ride fare with another person. Uber is going to remove the option from April and we expect the new version to be released by June, as per the timeline of the month mentioned by Uber.

We tried using the split fare feature on the Uber app in India and it seems that the company has disabled this feature globally. We’ll try to check this with Uber and give you an update. It is possible that the new version of Split Fare may support other modes of payment except cash for riders.

The ride-hailing app lets you pay for rides in India with cash, debit/credit cards and even using UPI apps like Google Pay, and Paytm UPI. In other markets, it may offer Apple Pay as an option, as NFC-based payments are a popular method for users.

Uber wants to change how split fare works, and that’s okay. But the platform has other issues, mainly due to the use of digital payments. Drivers have become notorious for canceling rides if a person does not want to pay for the trip via cash.

So, adding more options for split-fare will make life easier for the consumer, but hardly solve the drivers’ problems.

We expect Uber to consider both the sides before making any major changes to the feature, which could further complicate matters.
