Typhoon In-fa hit China’s east coast south of Shanghai on Sunday after airline flights and trains were canceled and the public was ordered to stay indoors. State TV quoted the national weather agency as saying that the typhoon made landfall in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province. It has forecast 250–350 millimeters (10–14 in) of rain. “People should not go out voluntarily,” the bureau said.

When it rained in Taiwan, the typhoon was packing winds of 155 kph (95 mph) and gusts of 191 kph (120 mph). It toppled tree branches but no deaths or injuries were reported.

State TV reported that hundreds of flights were canceled at Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao airports and more are expected on Monday. Shanghai closed the park and the riverfront Bund district, a popular tourist area.

The international airport in Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, also canceled flights. According to state TV, train service to Ningbo, a port city south of Shanghai, was suspended. The Zhoushan Bridge that connects the islands near Ningbo was closed, as were schools, markets and businesses in Zhejiang Province.

On Saturday, large container ships took off from Shanghai’s Yangshan port, one of the world’s busiest shipping hubs. State TV said a shipwreck in Nantong, which borders Shanghai to the north, stopped leaving ships in the Yangtze River.

Meanwhile, in central China, the death toll rose to 58 after record rains hit the major city of Zhengzhou on Tuesday, state TV reported. Rain flooded the Zhengzhou subway tunnel, where at least 12 people died, power outages for a hospital and other buildings, and roads were covered with mud.

According to Shanghai news outlet The Paper, rescuers used bulldozers and rubber boats to evacuate residents from areas that were still under water.
