New Delhi: As the threat of a third wave of COVID-19 looms large, the Center on Tuesday (July 20, 2021) informed that two-thirds of Indians have developed antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, but 400 million people are still vulnerable. Huh.
Citing ICMR’s fourth national COVID-19 serosurvey conducted in June and July, the Center said the overall seroprevalence was 67.6 per cent. This included more than 28,975 persons (adults and children) besides 7,252 health workers in 70 districts of 21 states where three rounds were conducted earlier as well.
During a media briefing on the COVID-19 situation, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said, “Two-thirds of the general population above the age of six, or 67.6 per cent, were found to have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at the latest National serosurvey.
“A third of the population did not have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, which means around 400 million people are still vulnerable to COVID-19 infection,” he said.

The ICMR chief said that people without antibodies are at risk of a wave of infection.
He said that in ICMR’s fourth national COVID-19 serosurvey, which included 2,892 in the age group of 6-9 years, 5,799 in 10-17 and 20,284 in the age group of 18 years and above, seroprevalence in the age group of 6-9 years. was 57.2 percent, in the age group of 10-17 years, it was 61.6 percent, in the age group of 18-44 it was 66.7 percent, while in the age group of 45-60 years it was 77.6 percent and in the age group above 60, it was about 76.7 percent was.
The prevalence was found to be 66.7 percent in rural areas and slightly higher than 69.6 percent in urban areas.
Seroprevalence, specifically, is the percentage of individuals in a population who have antibodies to an infectious agent.
In the third serosurvey conducted in December-January, the seroprevalence was 24.1 per cent.
The Director General of ICMR said that the findings suggest that there is a ray of hope but there is no room for complacency and COVID-appropriate behavior and community engagement has to be maintained.
The sero-survey was conducted by 28,975 persons (adults and children) besides 7,252 health workers in 70 districts where the first three rounds were also conducted.
Bhargava also said that 85 per cent of health workers surveyed had antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and a tenth of HCWs were still not vaccinated.
In the adult population, 12,607, or 62.2 percent, had no coronavirus vaccine, while in the adult population, 24.8 percent, or 5,038 people surveyed, had received a single dose, while 13 percent, or 2, 631 individuals had received both doses.
By immunization status, it was 62.3 percent among non-vaccinated people, 81 percent of those taking a single dose, and 89.8 percent of those who were fully vaccinated.
The ICMR chief said the state’s heterogeneity indicates the possibility of waves of infection in the future.
“There may be some states where the population is weak, so those states are more likely to have future waves,” he said.
Bhargava warned that social, public, religious and political gatherings should be avoided and non-essential travel should be discouraged and travel should be done only after being fully vaccinated.
During the media briefing, NITI Aayog member (health) Dr VK Paul said that 400 million people have no antibodies and the pandemic is by no means over.
“The second wave is still there and the risk of a new outbreak is still very high,” he said.
On the situation in the country, Paul said that Kerala is still on “slight to steady growth” and Maharashtra is witnessing some decline.
“Andhra Pradesh is still a matter of concern and 46 districts have more than 10 per cent positivity,” he said.
