Two more franchises, 74+ matches, more worries about ICC FTP

The Indian Cricket Board plans to accommodate two more franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL).IPLThe 2022 season is likely to worry cricket boards around the world as an increase in the number of teams will mean the tournament will be extended by 10-15 days to accommodate more matches. The extended phase will overlap with the Future Tours Program (FTP).

According to Hindustan Times, the tournament will span 74 matches, with teams divided into two groups of five each.

“We are not ready for 94 matches yet,” HT quoted a BCCI official as saying. “Our broadcasters are not ready. There are issues with foreign player availability and finding a suitable window. We will consider a bigger window in future years.”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has no official window for the IPL, which means that teams playing series during the IPL dates will either have to do without their IPL-bound players or have to play their series outside the IPL schedule. will have to be planned.

“A lot of series are drawn up in March and June 2022, the months in which the tournament (usually played in April and May) can be extended in terms of an increase in the number of matches. This should be kept in mind,” a former member of the IPL Governing Council told IANS.

The ICC, which does not have a dedicated window for IPL as it is a domestic event, confirmed to IANS on Monday that it will not have an extended IPL on its agenda at the upcoming board meeting on July 15.

This means the boards have to sort it out on their own.

India and eight other countries, which send players to the IPL, will play in the months of March, May and June next year according to the ICC’s 2018-2023 FTP.

Australia, Bangladesh, South Africa, India, New Zealand and Afghanistan are expected to play international cricket in March 2022, while England and New Zealand are expected to play cricket in May 2022.

Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, India and England are scheduled to play in June and July.

Although Pakistan, Netherlands, Ireland and Zimbabwe are also scheduled to play international cricket during this phase, their players are not included in the IPL. Players from Pakistan are banned while players from the other three teams usually do not get takers from IPL franchises.

The current FTP program is up to March 2023. The 50-over World Cup will be held in India in the months of February-March. This means that IPL 2023 may have to be abandoned by the beginning of March and IPL 2023 may have to be extended till June.

As of now Ahmedabad seems to be getting a new franchise.

A Times of India report on Monday said that the BCCI has already prepared the blueprint for the induction of two new teams.

It added that the tender document for the new franchise will be presented in mid-August, the new franchise in mid-October, the mega auction will be held in December while the tender document for the sale of media rights will be brought out in mid-January. .
