Two minor tribal girls were allegedly gang-raped in Tripura’s Gomati district. The police gave this information on Friday.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Jyotishman Das Chowdhary said the main accused has been identified as Molarai Jamatiya of Tingharia, but the remaining eight accused are still absconding.

According to the police, both the girls had come to Amarpur town of the district on Wednesday to attend ‘Baishaki Mela’, an annual cultural event, and met Molarai, who had befriended one of them on Facebook.

On Wednesday night, the youth took them from the fair premises on a scooty to the rubber plant in Chechua. Seven to eight youths were waiting there. After reaching there, Molarai and his friends raped both the girls”, the AIG said.

Molarai then took the two girls to Amarpur and dropped them off in the early hours of Thursday, he said, adding that the victims were taken to the Birgunj police station.

Based on the statements of the two girls, the police swung into action and arrested Molarai on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the gang-rape case.

“We have arrested the main accused in the case and are trying to arrest other accused. Medical examination of the victims has been done as part of the investigation process”, he said.

The Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) has condemned the gang rape of two tribal girls.

“It is shocking that two girls were gang-raped by a group of youths in Chechua area of ​​Amarpur. We condemn the crime and demand exemplary punishment for those involved in the heinous act”, TCW Chairperson Barnali Goswami said on Friday.
