Two day test match between England and West Indies

The fourth Test of the five-match series during England’s tour of the West Indies in 2002 made it into the history books for being the first Test match to be finished within two days. West Indies suffered an apocalypse during the game as they gifted the hosts an easy win by an innings and 39 runs.

Before the fourth Test, the five-match series was tied at 1-1. West Indies won the first Test by an innings and 93 runs while England won the second match by two wickets. The third game between the two sides in Manchester ended in a draw.

Visiting captain Jimmy Adams, playing the fourth Test at Headingley, Leeds, chose to bat first. In the first innings, West Indies scored 172 runs on the scoreboard in just 48.4 overs. Ramnaresh Sarwan was the highest run-scorer for his Caribbean team by scoring 59 runs in 82 balls.

For England, Craig White was the highest wicket-taker with five wickets to his name. White was backed by Darren Gough, who picked up three wickets at an economy rate of 3.47.

England were also quick in their stance in reply to West Indies 172. The team scored 272 runs on the scoreboard after playing 81.5 overs. Michael Vaughan seemed to be the mission’s key man as he added 76 runs in 132 balls. Graeme Hick scored a crucial half-century for England while Graham Thorpe scored 46 runs.

What happened in the second innings was nothing less than a nightmare for the visiting team. By the end of the second innings, West Indies were just 100 runs behind England. However, instead of making amends, the entire team put up a disastrous performance. Five West Indies batsmen were dismissed for zero in the third innings.

As the visitors fell for 61 runs in 26.2 overs, Jimmy emerged as the top scorer with 19 runs. The pace duo of Andy Caddick and Gough did the most damage as they completely troubled the opposition with five and four wickets respectively. The collapse of the West Indies gave England an easy win by an innings and 39 runs within two days of the Test match.
