NOIDA: Two men, accused of robbing over a dozen people after befriending over gay dating applications after a brief encounter in Sector 58, were arrested on Sunday. Police said one of the accused was injured in the firing.
Following a tip-off, Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ranvijay Singh said that the police have laid a trap near Jaipuria Institute of Management.
When two men – Dipanshu and Amit – were seen riding a motorcycle without a registration plate, the police signaled them to stop.
“The accused opened fire on the police and tried to run away, so we had to retaliate. Dipanshu was shot in the leg while his accomplice Amit managed to escape. He was later arrested during a search operation.
The ADCP said the two men would befriend people on the Blued app, a gay live chat and dating app, and later ask the victims to meet them. “They usually called their victims to a secluded place and took away their valuables and other belongings. They were also involved in various road crimes including snatching, theft and others,” said Singh, adding that both the men were residents of Greater Noida’s Badalpur area.
He has been booked under section 392 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Police said they would be produced in a local court on Monday.
A country-made pistol, a stolen motorcycle and nine mobile phones have been recovered from them, the police said.
