Twitter locks Ravi Shankar Prasad’s account for AR Rahman’s song, offers clarification

Mumbai: Twitter has reacted to the issue of Union Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad temporarily restricting access to his Twitter account. The micro-blogging platform clarified that it was done because of a DMCA notice, adding that it responds to legitimate copyright complaints.

A Twitter spokesperson said the tweet in question has been put on hold.

“We can confirm that the Hon’ble Minister’s account access was only temporarily restricted due to a DMCA notice, and that the referenced tweet has been blocked. The reaction came after Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called the micro-blogging platform to block his account without any prior notice, calling it a ‘gross violation’ of IT guidelines by Twitter.

He revealed that he was denied access to his Twitter account for nearly an hour over an alleged violation of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

He wrote, “Twitter’s action was in gross violation of Rule 4(8) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules 2021, where they give me no prior notice before denying me access to my own account. failed to deliver,” he wrote.

Prasad, who has been criticizing Twitter for not complying with India’s IT Rules 2021, alleged that the action was taken because of the same: “It is clear that my statements call for arbitrary and arbitrary action by Twitter. , especially sharing the clip. My interviews to TV channels and its powerful impact have clearly ruffled its wings.”

“Whatever any platform does, they have to fully comply with the new IT rules and there will be no compromise on that,” he said.

Twitter has been at loggerheads with the Indian government over its compliance with IT guidelines, following which it lost its status as an intermediary platform in the country for non-compliance with the new intermediary guidelines.

As a result, the company has lost its legal shield in India from facing prosecution over users’ posts.
