In a second mass shooting on the same day, three people were killed and 14 were injured in a shooting near a nightclub in Tennessee on Sunday.

Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy said during a news conference that fourteen people were hit by bullets and three were hit by vehicles as they tried to flee the scene. Murphy said two people were killed in the shooting and one person died after being hit by a vehicle. He said sixteen of the victims were adults and one was a juvenile and that several were in critical condition.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 2:42 a.m. on McCulley Avenue near a nightclub and found several victims upon arrival. She said that the authorities immediately started providing assistance and securing the spot.

There were several shooters and Murphy asked anyone in the community to come forward with information about the shooting. She said the police believe it was an isolated incident and that the authorities do not believe there is any threat to public safety.

Murphy said it would be a complex investigation going forward.

“We are trying to determine what exactly happened and what caused it,” she said.

The shooting comes over the weekend when six teenagers were injured during an exchange of gunfire in the city’s Chattanooga business district.
