Turtle hatchlings make their way to sea | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Udupi: About 74 olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings made their way to the sea near Kodi Light House, Kundapur, late in the night on Thursday. On December 18, local fisherman Babu Mogaveera noticed a sea turtle nesting site near the lighthouse at Kodi Beach, Following this, the forest department, with the support of NGOs and locals, were monitoring the place, and enclosures were built.
Providing details about the hatchlings, Dinesh Saranga, chief coordinator FSL-India Kundapur, said the hatchlings emerged between 9.45 pm and 12.20 am. Representatives from the forest department, Reef Watch, Clean Kundapura Project and local fishermen were present. By holding lights and making pathways to the oceans, the volunteers helped the hatchlings enter the sea, he said.
The team, including Venkatesh, Nagaraj Shetty, Dinesh from FSL India, Subrahmanya Saranga, a local, Dr Tejaswini, Viril from Reef Watch Marine Conservation Centre, Santhosh from Clean Kundapur and Ranjith, Uday and Astha Shetty from the forest department, have spent the last nine nights on the shore, waiting for the hatchlings to arrive.
“This year, five nesting sites were observed, as against 11 nesting sites observed last year. The team, with the forest department, have been monitoring the hatcheries since December 18. The temperature is monitored every day,” said Dinesh.
The beach cleaning drive led by Bharath Bangera has helped in the conservation of sea turtles.
Rakesh Soans, president FSL,India, has made sure that the team closely monitors the hatchery, and that a team member is always present at the site.
