The incident made for a blockbuster watch but many feel it was something that could have been avoided. However, it was something that was waiting to happen with two cricketers who were famous for not liking each other despite being from Delhi and playing international cricket side by side.

“You saw on TV that Mayor and Virat were walking together for a few meters after the match. Meyers asked Kohli why he was constantly abusing him and Virat in turn asked why he (Meyer) was ‘staring’ at him. Earlier (Amit) Mishra had complained to the umpire that Virat was continuously abusing Naveen (ul-Haq), who is the No.10 batsman.

“When Virat made the comment, Gautam realized things could turn ugly, pulled the Mayor over and asked him not to hold talks. The heated debate that followed seemed a bit childish,” he said.
Gautam asked ‘Kya bol raha hain bol’ (What were you saying?) and Virat replied, ‘Maine aapko kuch bola hi nahi, aap kyon ghus rahein ho?’ (Why are you coming in between when I haven’t told you anything?).
Gautam replied,Tuney agar mere player ko bola hai, matlab tune meri family ko gali diya hai, (You abused my player and it is like abusing my family) and Virat’s reply was, ‘Toh aap apne family ko sambhal ke rakhiye, (Then you take care of your family).
Gambhir’s last reply before parting was,Toh ab tu mujhe sikhayega…’ (So now I have to learn from you …).”
Both Kohli and Gambhir were heavily fined for their roles in the controversy.
