Troubled by the defeat, the candidates of Panchayat elections in Odisha dug the road, removed the street light

A candidate upset over his defeat in the recent panchayat elections in Odisha expressed his dismay by allegedly digging a village road and removing street lights.

The defeat was not good for Barik Shabar Barapachidia, who was contesting against Haribandhu Karji in the Gram Panchayat elections in Raigad block of Gajapati district. Villagers claim that after the third phase of rural elections held on February 20, Barik got frustrated and started doing illegal activities in the village.

He alleged that Barik along with his associates dug up one of the major roads of the village, which connected the village with the Gangabad GP area. The villages claim that there are alternate roads leading to the area, but the road that has been dug was a shortcut and was more accessible to the villagers. Villagers claim that as a result, people of Talasahi, Kantakumbh, Shagadia, Loba, Muntasahi villages are facing problems in going to the Panchayat office.

Gurunath Sabar, a villager, said, “The defeated sarpanch candidate and his supporters have blocked the road by digging.

Gangabara Panchayat is located on the border of Andhra Pradesh and has about 24 remote villages and about 1500 voters.

Recently elected sarpanch Haribandhu Karji has now filed an FIR at Garbandha police station alleging that Barik Shabar has vandalized public roads. Police has started investigation in the matter. Garbandha police officer Sabeshwar Samantaray said, “We are probing the matter and will soon take action against the accused.”
