Tropical Storm Elsa brings strong winds, incessant rain to Cuba

Tropical Storm Elsa hit eastern Cuba on Sunday, with strong winds rattling palms and bringing incessant rain to parts of the Caribbean island’s southern coast, as others in the region still battled downpours.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said maximum sustained winds were near 95 kmph with high gusts.

Local forecasters are warning of intense rain with the worst days in central and perhaps western Cuba.

According to provincial reports, more than 100,000 people have been evacuated, most of them in the homes of family and friends, but thousands have also been evacuated to government shelters.

Evacuations were underway as far west as Havana for fear of dilapidated buildings collapsing due to rain over the next few days.
