Tripura municipal elections on November 25

The Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday announced elections to 20 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, in all eight districts of the state on November 25. The term of office of Urban Local Bodies had ended on December 18, 2020. But his election could not be conducted due to the Covid pandemic.

An official release said that the SEC has now decided to hold elections to the municipal bodies after the situation improves. This will be the first civic election of the ruling BJP since Tripura came to power in 2018. TMC, which wants to expand in Tripura, has said that it will contest the upcoming elections in the north eastern state.

Dev, who is overseeing the party’s activities in the state, said the final strategy would be worked out after the elections are declared. A total of 5,94,772 voters are eligible to vote in the municipal elections and the number of female voters is more than male voters in urban areas.

According to the electoral roll published in January 2021, the number of female voters is 3,00,377, the number of male voters is 2,93,979 and another 16. Announcing the date of the civic polls, State Election Commissioner ML Dey said that the notification for the election will be issued. The filing of nominations will start on October 27 and as per rules on that day. He said that the process of submission of nomination papers will continue till November 3 and the date of scrutiny has been fixed on November 5. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is November 8.

Dey said the model code of conduct has come into force in 18 of the 23 sub-divisions of the state soon after the announcement of municipal elections.

He told reporters that polling would be held between 7 am and 4 pm in 770 polling stations and counting of votes would begin at 8 am on November 28. The entire process of election will end on December 4.

“The model code of conduct has come into force with the announcement of the elections. I hope all political parties will follow the rules.” Voting will be videographed.

He said that a decision on webcasting is yet to be taken and it will depend on the arrangements. The state has 20 municipalities, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, with a total of 334 seats, of which eight are reserved for scheduled tribes, 85 for scheduled castes and 157 for women, the release said.
