Tripura Assembly Elections 2023: 45 Candidates Crorepatis, DY CM Richest – Report

The report by civil society organization Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said the ruling BJP has 17 crorepati candidates, followed by Tipra Motha nine and CPI(M) seven.

According to a report, out of a total of 259 candidates contesting the Tripura Assembly elections on February 16, 45 are crorepatis.

Congress has six crorepati candidates, Trinamool Congress has four and two independent candidates are also crorepatis.

Reports said BJP’s Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, contesting from Charilam constituency, is the richest candidate with movable and immovable assets worth Rs 15.58 crore.

ADR state coordinator Bisvendu Bhattacharjee on Wednesday said Chief Minister Manik Saha is the second richest candidate with assets of Rs 13.90 crore. Saha Town is contesting from Bardovali seat.

The third richest candidate is Abhijit Sarkar of Tipra Motha with Rs 12.57 crore, Bhattacharjee said.

The BJP, which has fielded 55 candidates, also has the highest average assets of Rs 1.86 crore, he said.

He said that Chayan Bhattacharya, the Congress candidate from Dharmanagar assembly constituency, has the highest liability of Rs 3.07 crore.

“Out of the total candidates for the upcoming elections, 41 (16%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. In the 2018 elections, out of 297 candidates, 22 (7%) candidates had declared criminal cases”, he said.

Bhattacharya said seven out of 13 Congress candidates (54%) have criminal cases while nine out of 55 BJP candidates have criminal cases.

“Of the 43 Left Front candidates, nine (16%) have criminal cases. Eight candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder.”

Out of total 259 candidates, 65 are graduates, 55 are class 12 pass and 39 are matriculate. The ADR report states that thirty-six candidates are class 8 pass and nine are class 5 pass.
