The TMC on Wednesday condemned the arrest of its spokesperson Saket Gokhale in a money laundering case, saying he was the target of a “political witch-hunt” by the BJP.
The party also said that central agencies were being misused by the opposition parties.
“This is nothing but a witch hunt by the BJP-led government. Center is misusing investigative agencies to target opposition leaders. The arrests reflect the bias and selective approach on the part of the central agencies as they turn a blind eye to the crimes of BJP leaders which are going on scot-free,” TMC Rajya Sabha party leader Derek O’Brien said.
The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday arrested TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in a crowdfunding initiative in Gujarat. Official sources gave this information.
Gokhale was taken into custody under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Ahmedabad, where he is lodged in judicial custody in connection with the Gujarat Police case.
They were produced before an Ahmedabad court, which remanded them in ED custody till January 31, officials said.
The state police had arrested Gokhale from Delhi in December last year in connection with alleged misappropriation of funds collected through crowdfunding. The Gujarat High Court had on Monday refused regular bail to Gokhale in the case and asked him to approach the court only after the charge sheet is filed.
The TMC leader had approached the High Court after a sessions court and a magistrate’s court in Ahmedabad recently denied him bail after the expiry of his arrest and remand period. Gokhale has been in judicial custody since January 5 and lodged in a jail in Ahmedabad. In this case, the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch arrested him from Delhi on 30 December 2022.
