Mysore: Country’s first public bicycle sharingPBS) System step by step, which was inaugurated in June 2017, is all set for a major upgrade and modernisation.
Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and Mysuru Municipal Corporation (MCC) is all set to use technology including Internet of Things (IoT) to further promote Trin Trin, which is now one of the major attractions of Mysore tourism.
The PBS modernization proposal includes an upgradation from a conventional bicycle to a battery-powered pedal-assist cycle, a shift from a beam style dock to a dock-less system and the introduction of an IoT-based integrated lock system.
In accordance with the reform and modernization of the PBS proposal, it is planned to increase the number of cycles to 1,000 in addition to increasing the cycle hub to 100. The idea behind this exercise is to tap the tourism potential of the city, reduce the operating cost, reduce the wide coverage. area, ease of access with a fully automated system, etc.
As per the proposal, the PBS modernization will pave the way for three separate technological interventions in the current system. These include upgrading from a traditional bicycle to a pedal-assist bicycle to reduce the stress and impact on the rider’s knees and thighs caused by pedaling in the city’s undulating terrain. Fitness travel users or any other user can choose to pedal like a normal bicycle whenever they want.
MCC has introduced a battery operated pedal assist cycle. The proposed change from beam style dock to dock-less system will make the system more flexible. The IoT-based integrated lock in bicycle not only makes the bicycle independent of any fixed infrastructure such as beams or bollards, but is also efficient and effective in terms of ease of operation, robust nature of the system and low maintenance cost. MCC has invited national competitive bidding for the same.

electric bicycle
DULT Commissioner V Manjula said that this exercise has been done to further expand the network and connect more locations and add more cycles. Trin Trin currently has 15,000 registered users and its usage grew from 1.4 rides per day in 2017 to 2.2 in 2019. Post-Covid lockdown, usage trend is gradually increasing, but is yet to reach pre-Covid levels. Trin is based on Trin docking technology. Now, app-based dock-less technology is available. The newly upgraded Trin Trin will be dockless and will have pedal-assisted electric cycles, he added.
1,200 rides being recorded every day
Amid the rise in Covid-19 cases, the number of rides remains good. According to Trin Trin Manager Asha KerakattyTrin Trin is now recording an average of 1,000 to 1,200 rides every day. “On weekends, service is not available due to the weekend curfew,” she said.
