Justin Vicky, a 33-year-old fitness influencer in Indonesia, died in a tragic gym accident after a 210 kg barbell broke his neck while attempting a squat press. On July 15, the video of his accident at a gym in Bali went viral on social media.
In the video, Vicky was seen attempting intense squat presses with the help of a spotter at the Paradise Bali gym. After sitting down, he seemed unable to stand straight and fell back into a sitting position, according to ANI citing media reports.
The barbell fell behind the bodybuilder’s neck, causing him and the spotter behind him to lose their balance and fall backward. His neck was broken after the accident and “vital nerves connecting to his heart and lungs were severely compressed”.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries soon after the emergency operation.
Many people paid tribute to him after his video went viral on social media. In a statement on Instagram, Paradise Bali Gym said Vicky was an “inspiration, inspiration and unwavering support”.
The post further read, “His infectious energy and genuine passion for helping change the lives of others touched us deeply. Through countless workouts, words of encouragement and kind guidance, he became an irreplaceable part of our fitness journey and our gym family.”
Many people on social media also warned about the dangers of ego lifting and called for additional safety measures while working out.
