Scores of eager punters have already made their way through the gates of Flemington ahead of Derby Day Melbourne.

Racing enthusiasts were seen wearing face masks amid a crowd of 5,500 spectators at the start of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.

In the first race, jockeys will jump over the barrier at 12.20 pm, while the Group One Victoria Derby will be the 2500m feature event at 3.45 pm.

At Rosehill Gardens, west of Sydney, a crowd of 10,000 will witness an afternoon of racing with the Golden Eagles before 5pm.
