Toofan: If a film is just entertaining then it is a bit rubbish to me, says Farhan Akhtar

In his career spanning over two decades, Farhan Akhtar has directed and produced several critically acclaimed films including Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, Luck By Chance, Talaash and Gully Boy. Not only this, Akhtar has been showing a range of acting over the days, from his nuanced roles in Rock On and Kartik Calling Karthik to his powerhouse dramatic turn in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. One thing that elevates most of Akhtar’s films from mere entertaining films to great ones is that most of them actually have something important to say about modern society, something that is even more relevant today. could.

“I think naturally I think a film should have something more to say than what you see on the surface,” says Farhan, who often feels very deliberate and responsible about projects. “I mean this depth. Can go as far as one wants but something has to happen. It may not be a chain of events that makes you realize why they put this together. And then, when we talk about the message in a film it’s not always necessarily something that has some kind of stand but something that resonates with the viewer emotionally on some level.”

Elaborating on his inclination towards films, which are not just entertainment, Farhan says, “Somewhere for me ‘Lakshya’ has a very definite motive and a very definite stand. But ‘Zindagi Na’ What does a movie like ‘Milgi Dobara’ or ‘Rock On’ tell you? It just tells you that friendship is important and take time for your friends or don’t react so easily or end things when you are emotional and they are small There are things but they stay with you because you realized that there are such things, that you should do in your life too. Learning from these movies is not like deep learning, but they are the little things in life and that through a movie And it’s nice to reminisce through characters you enjoyed, or stories you enjoyed.

“As long as the movie is something other than just entertainment, I think it’s a bit crap to me if a movie is just entertaining, just for the sake of being entertaining. I haven’t been successful every time in achieving it but when it’s like that. If it happens, it feels great.”

Akhtar is currently gearing up for the release of director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s boxing drama Toofan. The multi-faceted star has undergone intense training for the role of Aziz Ali aka Ajju Bhai, a punk who becomes a national level boxer. Toofan is Akhtar’s second collaboration with Mehra. The two had earlier worked together in another sports-based film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013.

Talking about the most challenging aspect of working in Toofan, Akhtar says, “Learning a new discipline, a new sport, it requires a lot of focus and training to try to be good at it. Luckily, I had a good team. So he really worked me through it all. But mentally you have to be really really strong.

“Many times you’re in the middle of your training, where you’re being pushed where your body wants to leave, but it’s really your mind that’s telling you what you’re doing it for. Whatever you do. ounces too, he happens to do something which is the bigger story of the film.”

Like his other films, Akhtar says this too is beyond obvious. “It happens a lot. The game is really the background… It’s so exciting, of course, it’s cinematic, it’s adrenaline, all that stuff. But the heart of the film is in the relationships between these characters. “

Toofan also stars Mrunal Thakur, who plays Dr. Ananya and Aziz’s girlfriend, and Paresh Rawal as their boxing coach Nana Prabhu. Co-produced by Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under their banner Excel Entertainment, Toofan is set to release digitally on Amazon Prime Video on July 16.
