Ireland played a close thriller against New Zealand in the series ending the third ODI at The Village, Dublin, but fell short by just one run in the end. The hosts had nothing to lose and played with the impudence that New Zealand had on the brink. Coming back into the match, New Zealand batted first and rode on a century from Martin Guptill to post a mammoth total of 360 runs. Nevertheless, the hosts started chasing and brought the equation down to 3 runs off just 1 ball. Paul Stirling and Harry Tector both scored centuries.
But New Zealand bowler Blair Tickner won in the end as he bowled short and Irish batsman Graham Hume went for swing wildly, only to miss the line completely.
