Tokyo Olympics: Rs 1 crore cash prize for each Punjab player in the bronze-winning team

The Punjab government on Thursday announced that it would give a cash prize of Rs 1 crore to each hockey player from the state, who was part of the Indian men’s team that won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games. Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi made the announcement after defeating Germany 5-4 in the bronze play-off.

Sodhi tweeted, “On this historic day of Indian Hockey, I am happy to announce a cash prize of Rs.1 crore each to the players of 4m Punjab.

The Indian men’s hockey team had eight players, including Punjab captain Manpreet Singh. The others are Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Hardik Singh, Shamsher Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh and Mandeep Singh. Sodhi had on Friday announced that hockey players from the state participating in the Tokyo Olympics would get Rs 2.25 crore for winning a gold medal.

Prior to this bronze, India had won an Olympic medal in hockey at the 1980 Games in Moscow. Sodhi said that he is very proud of the performance of the entire Indian hockey team in the Tokyo Olympics. “It is time to enjoy and celebrate the historic bronze. It is my duty and pride as the Sports Minister of #Punjab to promote, encourage and inspire the flag bearers of the national sport,” Sodhi said in another tweet.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also congratulated the team for this achievement. “A proud and historic moment for the country as the men’s hockey team defeated Germany in a spectacular match to win a bronze medal at the #Olympics. To finish on the podium after 41 years is a tremendous achievement and a hockey bronze worth its weight in gold. Congratulations,” tweeted Amarinder.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar also congratulated the team and said that the whole of India is proud of its talented players.
