TOKYO: Germany’s Malaika Mihambo won gold in the women’s long jump at the Olympics on Tuesday, snatching victory from former champion Brittany Reese with her last jump of the competition.
Mihambo lay in bronze medal position before her final jump, but she made her way down the runway to jump the season’s best of 7.00 metres.
This left 2012 Olympic champion Reese – who had led the competition with a best jump of 6.97m – attempting to take the lead in a final attempt.
But the American could only manage 6.84 with her last jump to settle for silver.
Nigeria’s Ace Broom won the bronze medal with a best jump of 6.97m.
