Tokyo Olympics: Germany’s football team walks off friendly after allegations of racist abuse

The German men’s Olympic football team left the pitch on Saturday after allegedly racially abused defender Jordan Torunarigha five minutes before the end of their practice game against Honduras.

The game, played behind closed doors, was tied 1–1 at the time of the incident, which the Honduras national team called a misunderstanding.

“The game ended 5 minutes ago with a score of 1-1. Germany players left the pitch after Jordan Torunarigha’s racial abuse,” the national team said on Twitter.

“When one of our players is racially abused, playing is not an option,” said Germany’s Olympic football coach and former international Stefan Kuntz.

Germany will begin their Olympic Group D campaign against Brazil on 22 July, while Honduras will take on Romania in their Group B opener.
