Tokyo Olympics 2021: India reaches semi-finals of men’s hockey after 49 years

The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Great Britain 3-1 in a quarterfinal match to reach the semi-finals of the Olympic Games after 49 years here on Sunday.

India sealed the eight-time Olympic champion’s victory with three field goals through Dilpreet Singh (7th), Gurjant Singh (16th) and Hardik Singh (57th).

Sam Ward scored the only goal for Great Britain in the 45th minute.

Even though the last of India’s eight Olympic gold medals came back in the 1980 Moscow Games, there was no semi-final in that edition as only six teams participated in the event.

India last entered the semi-finals of the Olympics at the 1972 Munich Games, where they lost 0–2 to arch-rivals Pakistan.

India will take on world champions Belgium in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Belgium beat Spain 3–1 in another quarter-final to seal their place in the last four rounds.

The second semi-final of the men’s hockey tournament will be played between Australia and Germany.
