On 30 April 1908, a bomb was detonated by Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chand Chaki. Judge Kingsford was the target of the blast, but he survived the attack and killed two British women. The British arrested Khudiram Bose the same evening and he was put on trial.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak wrote in favor of these two revolutionaries in his newspaper ‘Kesari’. For this reason, on 3 July 1908, Tilak was arrested by the British. He was sentenced to 6 years and imprisoned. While in jail, Tilak also wrote a 400-page book, Gita Rahasya.

Born on 23 July 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Tilak was one of the first Indian generation to receive a modern college education. He taught mathematics in schools and colleges for some time. Tilak believed that English education taught disrespect to Indian civilization, so he founded the Deccan Education Society so that Indians could be given good education.

Tilak started two newspapers in Marathi named ‘Maratha Darpan’ and ‘Kesari’, in which he used to write against the cruelty of British rule. Both these newspapers were very much liked among the people. It was due to the efforts of Lokmanya Tilak that Ganesh festival and Shivaji festival got the form of social festival in Maharashtra. Through these festivals, the public was made aware against the injustices of the British.

For this, he wrote an article in the newspaper, in which it was said through the lines of Gita that those who commit atrocities cannot be considered innocent.

It is said that inspired by this article, the Chapekar brothers killed Walter Charles Rand. The British government arrested Tilak for abetting the murder.

After his release from prison in 1914, Tilak founded the Home Rule League with Annie Besant in 1916. The aim of this movement was to establish Swaraj in India. Bal Gangadhar Tilak got a lot of fame during the Home Rule Movement, due to which he got the title of Lokmanya. This great leader of the country breathed his last on 01 August 1920. Mahatma Gandhi gave him the title of the architect of modern India.
