1868: Discovery of Helium

On this day in 1868, French astronomer Jules Jansen observed helium for the first time. During a solar eclipse in Guntur, India, he saw the rays of the sun coming out of the prism. During this a yellow spectrum line appeared in the spectrum emanating from the prism. Initially he thought that this line is because of sodium.

In the same year Joseph Norman also observed a similar yellow line in the sun’s rays. Joseph studied the sodium line and came to the conclusion that this line is different from the line D1 and D2 originating from sodium. He named it D3. He also discovered that this yellow line is visible due to some element present in the sunlight. He named it helium. The sun is called helium in the Greek language.

In 1895, the British chemist William Ramsay confirmed the existence of helium on Earth for the first time. He noticed that on heating the radioactive mineral clavite it has a yellow line in its spectrum. This yellow line has also been seen in the spectrum present in sunlight. After this study, he confirmed the existence of helium on Earth.
