The Olympic Games began on 10 October 1964 in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. These were the first Olympics to be held in Asia. The Games concluded on 24 October.

Actually, Tokyo was chosen for the 1940 Olympic Games, but because of China’s attack on Japan, the Olympics were given to Helinsky. Later the Olympic Games of 1940 and 1944 could not be held due to World War I.

Finally, in 1964, the Olympic Games were held in an Asian country. Yoshinori Sakai, born on 6 August 1945 in Hiroshima, was chosen to light the torch to commemorate the horrors of World War II. The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. The Tokyo Olympics was the first Olympics to be broadcast in the US and Europe using satellite. South Africa was excluded from these games because of its apartheid policies.

In these games which lasted for 15 days, 5 thousand 151 players from 93 countries took part. 163 events were organized in 20 sports, including judo and volleyball for the first time.

In these games, the Soviet Union topped by winning 96 medals. America finished second and third with 90 and Germany with 50 medals. India got only one medal in hockey. India avenged the 1960 Rome Olympics by defeating Pakistan in the hockey final.

2014: Nobel Announcement for Kailash Satyarthi

Today is a very special day for India. The Nobel Peace Prize was announced to Kailash Satyarthi, who ran the Bachpan Bachao Andolan. He was given this award along with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan. Due to this, his work for child rights in India got international recognition.

Kailash Satyarthi was born on 11 January 1954 in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. Kailash Satyarthi, an electronic engineer by profession, left his career at the age of 26 and started working for children. He campaigned against child labor and saved the lives of thousands of children.

He has also been the President of the Global March Against Child Labor. Satyarthi has also been attacked several times during the rescue of child labor. He was attacked during the raids on Delhi’s textile factory in 2011 and during the rescue of child artistes from the Great Roman Circus in 2004.

Prior to the Nobel, he has received many national and international awards including Germany’s The Eichner International Peace Award in 1994, America’s Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Award in 1995, the Medal of the Italian Senate in 2007 and the US Defenders of Democracy Award in 2009.

1967: Outer Space Treaty came into force

Outer Space Treaty is also called Outer Space Treaty in Hindi. This treaty took place on January 27, 1967 between the US, the Soviet Union and Britain and was done to prevent the use of nuclear weapons in outer space. 105 countries have signed this agreement. It came into force from 10 October 1967.

According to the terms of the treaty approved by the UN General Assembly in December 1966, no country has rights over outer space. All countries have complete freedom of space research. All countries that have signed this treaty can use outer space only for works related to peace. Military centers cannot be established in any way on the moon and other planets.

1846: British astronomer William LaSalle discovered the natural satellite of Neptune.
