BSF is the only Central Armed Police Force with its own Air Wing, Marine Wing and Artillery Regiment. BSF also has a Tier Smoke Unit (TSU), which is unique in India. The TSU is responsible for producing the tear gas weapons needed for anti-riot forces. It also exports it to other countries.

The BSF has a separate camel and dog wing, which helps them to expand their reach in difficult terrains like the India-Pakistan border in the Rann of Kutch.

The BSF has now deployed its first batch of women personnel on the border to carry out routine frisking of women as well as other duties performed by their male counterparts, including border guarding.
