Jahangir’s Begum gave birth to a son on Thursday, 5 January 1592. Jahangir expressed his desire to name his son to his father Akbar. Akbar called him Khurram. Khurram in Persian means happiness. On the sixth day of birth, Khurram was handed over to Akbar’s wife Ruqaiya, as Begum Ruqaiya had no children, so she adopted Khurram.

Akbar was the grandfather of Khurram. He himself was illiterate, but he left no stone unturned to get Khurram trained. At the same time, teach him the lessons of war from the best masters. Akbar had become so attached to Khurram that he started taking Khurram along in the war. From here the journey started for Khurram to become ‘Shah Jahan’.

Jahangir died in 1627. After his death, Khurram took the throne in 1628. After taking over the throne, Khurram’s name became Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan means the king of the world. Shah Jahan extended his kingdom in the north to Kandahar and conquered most of South India. Shah Jahan ruled till 1658 and achieved a lot during these 30 years of rule.

Itma-ud-daula was the vizier during Jahangir’s time. Abu Hasan Asaf Khan was the son of itma-ud-daula and Arjumand Bano was the daughter of the same Abu Hasan Asaf Khan. Arjumand Bano later known as Mumtaz. Mumtaz was the third wife of Shah Jahan.

In April 1607, 14-year-old Arjumand and 15-year-old Khurram got engaged. Then on May 10, 1612, after about 5 years of engagement, both of them got married. Between the engagement and marriage with Arjumand, Khurram had two more marriages.

It is said that there was a lot of love between Mumtaz and Shah Jahan. Both had 13 children. From marriage till death, Mumtaz remained pregnant almost every year. In June 1631, Mumtaz died while giving birth to her 14th child. It is said that two years after Mumtaz’s death, Shah Jahan had given up all the pleasures of luxury. His hair and beard had grown.

Taj Mahal built in memory of Mumtaz

Shah Jahan is also called the King of Architect. He built many buildings during his reign. One of these buildings is the Taj Mahal. When Mumtaz died in 1631, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for her tomb.

The Chief Architect of Taj Mahal was Ustad Isha Khan, who was a famous architect of that time. Apart from Persia and Turkey, 20 thousand laborers from India worked in the construction of Taj Mahal. One thousand elephants were engaged only for carrying goods.

It took 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. Its construction work, which started in 1631, was completed in 1653. Shah Jahan also wanted to build a Black Taj behind the Taj Mahal, but he started a conflict with his son Aurangzeb. Shah Jahan died on 22 January 1666 in Agra.
