On this day in 1982, for the first time, Doordarshan got colored from black and white. That is, 40 years ago, on this day, for the first time, there was a color broadcast on TV in the country. For the first time in India, the decision to broadcast in color was taken in view of the Asian Games to be held in the country.

Doordarshan became colorful in 1982, 23 years after its birth. At that time the color of Doordarshan from black and white was such a big achievement that it became a sign of prosperity. The demand for color TV became so high that the government had to import it.

Color broadcast added to the popularity of TV
After the color telecast of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s speech at the Red Fort on August 15 of the same year, the Asian Games held in November of the same year was also telecast in colour. The color broadcast that started on Doordarshan wrote new tales of the success and popularity of TV in India.

Doordarshan was started in 1959
Doordarshan started in 1959 as Indian Television. Earlier it was a part of All India Radio, but later it got separated from it. Initially, Doordarshan used to telecast only one-hour programs twice a week with the help of UNESCO. Their aim was to make the citizens aware.

It started daily broadcasting in 1965. News started coming. Then came Krishi Darshan, which is still broadcast on different channels of Doordarshan. Film songs were broadcast on Chitrahar.

Doordarshan became a household name in the 80s. Hum Log was the first serial that aired on Doordarshan. After this, mythological serials like Ramayana and Mahabharata, which aired on it, gained tremendous popularity. At the time of the telecast of both these serials, the roads in the country used to be deserted.

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan passed away
On this day in 1968, Hindustani classical music star Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan died. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, popularly known as ‘Tansen’ of the 20th century, had inherited music. He took early education from his father Ali Baksh Khan, uncle and grandfather. The father was the court singer of the Maharaja of Kashmir and this was called the Kashmiri gharana of music.

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan directed the film director K. 25 thousand rupees were taken for singing the song ‘Prem Jogan Ban Ke…’ from Asif’s film Mughal-e-Azam. This song became immortal with the film itself.

After partition in 1947, Ghulam Ali Khan went to Pakistan. But, he did not feel like there and he soon returned to India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1962. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan died on 25 April 1968 in Hyderabad.
