The ‘Statue of Liberty’, standing on Liberty Island, New York, was inaugurated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886. It is a symbol of friendship between America and France. This statue was made in July 1884 in France. To be brought from France to America, it was broken into 350 pieces and packed in 214 boxes.

It took 4 months for the statue to reach New York from Paris. The crown of the statue has 7 rays, which symbolize the 7 continents and 7 oceans of the world. During repairs in 1986, the new torch was encased in a thin sheet of 24-carat gold. In the left hand of the statue is a notebook or tablet, on which is written JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, which shows the date of independence of America on July 4, 1776. In 1984, UNESCO made it a Global Heritage Site.
