Today is the birthday of a sheep that was born in the lab. Scientists made this sheep through cloning. It was the first species in the world to be born in this way. This success filled the scientists with enthusiasm and this was followed by the cloning of different species.

For many years, scientists were trying to make clones, but could not succeed. Actually cloning is a very complex process and before this scientists had tried to do this many times but without success. This time scientists thought of cloning a sheep. Sir Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute got the responsibility of this entire project. This project was so important that Sir Wilmutt included various scientists, embryologists, veterinary doctors and staff in his team and the entire project was kept very confidential.

Body cells were removed from the body of a white sheep and egg cells were removed from the body of another sheep. These two cells were fused through nuclear transfer and inserted into the uterus of a third sheep. The role of the third sheep was simply to carry this child in her womb, just like a surrogate mother.

The hard work of the scientists paid off and on this day in 1996 the sheep was born. This was a great achievement for the scientific world. The sheep is said to have been named ‘Dolly’ after American singer and actress Dolly Parton. The reason for this was that Dolly Parton was very athletic and the sheep that were born from the clones was also like her.

This sheep was born, but was still away from the eyes of the world. It was brought to the world after 7 months on 22 February 1997. When the world came to know about this, Dolly became an overnight star. More than 3 thousand calls were received from all over the world to find out about Dolly in Sheep.

Dolly gave birth to her first lamb at the age of 2, which was named Bonnie. After that Dolly gave birth to twins and triplets once. When Dolly gave birth to her last lamb in September 2000, it was discovered that Dolly had lung cancer and arthritis. Dolly started walking limp and her health gradually deteriorated.

When Dolly’s troubles start to increase, the scientists decide to kill Dolly so that she can get rid of her troubled life. Dolly was killed by euthanasia on 14 February 2003.

Dolly was a charisma for the scientific world, so the Roslin Institute donated Dolly’s body to the National Museum of Scotland. You can still see Dolly in this museum today.

After the successful cloning of Dolly, the avenues for cloning other animals were opened for scientists. Later clones of pigs, horses, deer and oxen were also made. Attempts were also made to make clones of humans, but due to the complex structure of humans, this project could not be successful.

Scientists around the world also use cloning to save endangered species of animals. Scientists had once cloned the wild goat to save the extinct species, but that clone also died of lung disease.

1946: Bikini came to the world

On this day in 1946, for the first time the world saw a model wearing a bikini. This bikini was designed by mechanical engineer Louise Riard. Louise’s mother owned a clothing store, which is why she sometimes helped her with her mother’s work.

Actually, there are differences of opinion about who made the bikini. In May 1946, French fashion designer Jacques Haim created a garment called ‘Atom’, which he claimed was the world’s smallest swimsuit. He named this garment atom after the smallest unit of matter, atom.

But on July 5, 1946, Louise Riard introduced the modern bikini. Describing the bikini, she said that it is smaller than the smallest swimsuit in the world. There is also a reason behind giving the name of bikini to bikini. Actually there is a place called Bikini Atoll on Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. During 1946 to 1958, America conducted many nuclear tests here. Lewis remembered the name of this place for this reason and he named his garment a bikini.

Louise had made a bikini, but one of the major problems was finding a model to present it. Actually at that time no model was ready to come in front of the people wearing so little clothes. Lewis talked to many models for this but all refused to wear bikini. Eventually 19-year-old Michelin Bernardini agreed to the task. Michelin was a dancer in a club and had no problem wearing a bikini.

It is said that after the bikini photoshoot, Michelin became so famous that her fans wrote 50 thousand letters to her.
