COIMBATORE: More than 70 members of the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Federation (TNPTF) staged a sit-in protest at the Coimbatore Cloth Merchant Association (CCMA) Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Raja Street on Tuesday demanding that the educational department appoint headmasters in four government primary schools in the district.
The school education department has organized a transfer counseling for headmasters of government primary schools at the CCMA Government Girls Higher Secondary School, and hundreds of headmasters gathered on the school premises on Tuesday. More than 70 headmasters, who were members of the TNPTF, staged a sit-in protest.
A Thangabasu, Coimbatore district secretary, TNPTF said the school education department had not appointed headmasters at Shankar Nagar municipal primary schools, Muthukallur primary school, Iyadarpalayam primary school and IOB Colony Panchayat Union Primary School for more than four years. These schools have been functioning without headmasters.
“We have approached school education department officials repeatedly for the last four years to appoint the headmasters for the four primary schools. The teachers are forced to take care of the duties of head masters. The officials did not respond to our demands for the last four years. So, we have conducted the sit-in protest to bring the issue to the knowledge of the higher officials,’ said Thangabasu.
Chief educational officer N Geetha held talks with the told and assured them that headmasters would be appointed to the four schools very soon. Later, the protest was called off.
