The state government on Saturday announced the commencement of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in agriculture and horticulture in Tamil medium in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore.
The government has set aside ₹25 lakh for the first phase of the programme. This is the first time that the university will offer undergraduate courses in Tamil.
An expert committee will be constituted to prepare the syllabus for these programmes, which may be introduced from the next academic year, said N Kumar, the vice-chancellor. TNAU Coimbatore.
Whereas And programs are offered in English only, the university offers Diploma programs in Agriculture and Horticulture in Tamil. Kumar said the Agricultural Institute, Vamban near Pudukottai also offers diploma programs in Tamil.
He said that students coming from Tamil medium schools would benefit the most from these programmes. There is a special preference in state government jobs for candidates pursuing degrees in Tamil and the same preference for candidates pursuing these programs will encourage more students to take up these courses, Kumar said.
The government on Saturday also announced setting up of a research center in the name of organic farming warrior and scientist Nammazhawar. Describing the special budget for agriculture as an encouraging start, Kumar said the additional funding allocation in subsequent years would help in formulating a long-term sustainable agriculture policy.
