TN Public Department computer systems suffer ransomware attack

Computer systems of Tamil Nadu’s Public Department suffered a ransomware attack on Saturday – malware that employs encryption to hold victim information at ransom – with attackers allegedly demanding ransom in cryptocurrency for releasing the malware .

Information Technology Secretary Neeraj Mittal confirmed the ransomware attack, but said it was not significant. “We have isolated the affected systems that were under attack and are assessing the situation. We are trying to get the access back,” he said.

He declined to comment on the demand for around $2,000 in cryptocurrency as a ransom for the release of the malware.

It is learned that officials from the Center for Development of Advanced Computing and the Computer Emergency Response Team are working to fix the system.
