Thane: Citizens aged 75 years and above can travel for free in all Thane municipal transport buses, starting September 1, officials informed on Friday.
The proposal for allowing residents above 75 years of age was put up by Balaji Kakade, member of TMT committee, during the meeting this week, and was unanimously approved, informed Vilas Joshi, transport committee chairman.
Bhalchandra Behare, TMT manager, said those commuters born before August 15, 1947 will have to submit their age proof and secure a special travel pass that will be issued from the Wagle estate depot, B cabin and Satis bus stations. A centre at the Anand Nagar and Kalwa depots could also be started soon, he said.
“Commuters will have to show the card at the time of travel for free travel in AC and non-AC buses of the TMT. The administration is in the process of issuing cards now,” said Behare.
The free travel pass for TMT buses comes close on the heels of chief minister Eknath Shinde making an announcement for MSRTC buses following the 75 years of Independence. The administration said they expect roughly 2,000 passengers to avail the benefit.
Presently, around 2,500 commuters above 60 years get 50% travel concession in TMT buses.
