Three Sri Lankan players test positive for COVID-19 in Women’s World Cup qualifiers

Dubai: Three Sri Lankan players have tested positive for COVID-19 in ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 in Zimbabwe. The players tested positive after screening all team members after two players showed mild symptoms, as per the bio-secure protocol for the ongoing nine-team event in Harare on Sunday. The third player is considered asymptomatic. All three are in isolation and receiving proper medical care.

The remaining members of the Sri Lankan squad are negative but are currently in isolation as a precaution and will be tested again ahead of their opening match against the Netherlands on Tuesday. ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said that the event will go ahead as planned.

“We have a squad of 15 at the event, which allows for injuries and illness, including COVID-19, and in addition teams have the option of bringing travel reserves with them. “As you would expect, the rest of the team is being closely monitored and they will all be tested again before they take the field on Tuesday. “The Event Bio-Security Plan provides us with a protocol to effectively manage positive tests with the intention of enabling the event to go ahead while keeping all other players and participants safe,” Tetley said.

Sri Lanka will play the Netherlands on Tuesday in their opening match on Saturday (vs West Indies) and Monday (vs Ireland), along with their remaining Group A matches. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Zimbabwe and the United States make up Group B, with the three sides from each group making it to the Super Six stage, in which the final place will be decided. The tournament sets three qualifiers for the Women’s World Cup 2022 to be held in New Zealand from 4 March to 3 April, with five teams that have already qualified through the ICC Women’s Championship Australia, England, India, South Africa and hosts New Zealand. Along with the three qualifiers, the next two teams along with the top five from last time will also ensure a place in the next ICC Women’s Championship (IWC), as the number of teams has increased from eight to 10 in the third round of the IWC. ,
