Health Minister to urge Center to boost TN wax supply in Delhi
Health Minister Ma Subramaniam left for New Delhi on Wednesday to press the Union Health Ministry for more vaccines for Tamil Nadu.
Although the average number of vaccinations a day has improved, the state still has to cover more than 10 crore doses. He said that the minister said that he would ask the health ministry for unequal distribution by increasing the supply of two crore doses.
Chief Minister MK Stalin had earlier requested PM Narendra Modi to immediately provide 1 crore doses as a special allocation. Subramaniam told reporters at the Chennai airport on Wednesday that it would be discussed on priority in the meeting on Thursday afternoon.
When asked whether the three firms have been approached to manufacture vaccines at HLL Biotech unit in Chengalpet, Subramanian said, “We will emphasize on the need to start vaccine manufacturing at Chengalpet and Coonoor Pasteur Institute at the earliest.”
The HLL unit set up at ₹700 crore has been lying idle for over a decade and tenders invited (inviting bids to use the premises for manufacturing of vaccines) did not elicit any response.
After reporting over 3 lakh vaccinations in the last two days, TN reported a drop in the vaccination rate. On Wednesday, the state administered 2,07,259 doses – 1,57,689 doses of Covishield and 49,570 doses of Covaxin. This took the total vaccination figure to 1.7 crore.
According to the Union Health Ministry data, around 30 lakh people in Tamil Nadu received both doses of the vaccine. This is less than about 5% of the state’s population.
Some districts reported extreme shortages for the second dose of Covaxin. When the announcement that the vaccine was available broke, people thronged the vaccine camps, especially in the central region. For example, over 2,000 people arrived at the Pudukkottai centre, which had only 500 doses in stock.
People were sent back from the Corporation Vaccine Centers in Chennai city limits on Wednesday due to shortage.
